This language study program was my first experience of its kind and marked the first time I had ever traveled abroad alone. Before leaving, I was filled with anxiety and self-doubt; I worried about whether I could adapt to the language school given my poor English skills and whether I would be able to make friends. Upon arriving and taking the placement test on my first day, I realized just how severely lacking my English proficiency was. Although I began attending my assigned classes the following day, that first week was incredibly difficult. I struggled to understand what the teachers were saying, and I often felt frustrated and upset because I couldn't grasp even simple words or sentences. During that initial week, I found it so hard to communicate with my roommates that I actually avoided talking to them. Surprisingly, when I attended class in the second week, I began to pick up the teachers' pronunciation and vocabulary little by little—unlike in the first week. Although conversing with my roommates was still challenging, I was able to communicate a bit more than I had initially. Three weeks passed, and now, in my fourth week, I find myself chatting frequently with my roommates and holding conversations with the teachers—a significant change from day one.
I took a level test during the fourth week and noticed a marked improvement in my writing and speaking skills compared to the placement test I took on the first day. I used to be terrified of speaking English because I felt pressured to formulate the perfect thoughts in my head before saying anything; now, however, the necessity of using English to communicate actually motivates me to study the language even harder. I have also progressed from being unable to utter even a short sentence to being able to speak in short sentences—even if I am not yet fluent.
I have four weeks left, and I look forward to enjoying the rest of my language study program.
